Gaylads - Fire And Rain -Beverley's
After working for Coxsone and Sonia Pottinger during the Ska and Rock Steady eras, as well as a good portion of self-production, BB Seaton, Winston Delano Stewart and Maurice Roberts; better known as the Gaylads, ended up with Leslie Kong during the Reggae era.
This album has some of the same kind of selection found on so many albums of the time. A couple of pop or rock tunes and the rest all Reggae - even if some of them are covers of soul tunes. Sometimes the pop or rock tunes worked - 'Fire And Rain' for instance works OK, but 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' just doesn't. Tracks like that do not spoil the rest of the album, which is important because there are some excellent tunes here.
'Peace Love And Understanding' and 'Tell The Children The Truth' are classic reality tunes and show where the music was going even then. The production is crisp with the All Star Band in fine form. Mixing was probably done by Warrick Lynn - producing that clear Reggae sound that still sounds so good today. A sound that took the music into the international charts!!!
