Prince Buster - Greatest Hits - Melodisc
It must now be said that Cecil Campbell otherwise known as Prince Buster - Voice Of The People invented what is now known as the Dance Hall style. Even from the very early days Buster was there with his strange mix of songs, standards and dance hall lyrical mix up's - Just listen to 'Take It Easy' and try to make sense of it. Plus comments on the justice system, 'Judge Dread' 'Barrister Pardon'. Topped off with an interest in the 'Wild West' and gangsters. Set to a variety of rhythms from Ska to Reggae.
Prince Buster - She Was A Rough Rider - FAB - 1969
This set contains more Reggae influenced material than 'Greatest Hits' but is still as good. 'Dreams To Remember' being the best example. A love song with a twist that only Buster could really sing. Sometimes his vocal style comes across very much like Ken Parker, and very few singers could claim that distinction. 'Closer Together' is another fine song, which although not his own is still turned into something very special by that voice. Like all great artists he know how to pick his covers.
Prince Buster - Judge Dread - Blue Beat - 1967
Another really strong set of songs that takes in the rock steady and reggae era's. This time with the emphasis on rock steady. Here you will 'Judge Dread', 'The Appeal' and 'Judge Dread Dance', more examples of how far ahead of his time Prince Buster was, themes in a version style. Although 'Nothing Takes The Place' is another great love song - which sounds like a cover. While the final track on the album 'A Change Is Gonna Come' is a superb version of the Sam Cooke song. One of the best reality songs ever written.
Prince Buster - Sister Big Stuff - Melodisc
This album features music from the reggae and roots era's and is probably the weakest set. Although for some reason my track listing does not match the selection, so it's quite possible that the missing tracks do boost the set up. 'South Of The Border' sounds good, and so does 'Stick By Me'. 'Sister Big Stuff' and 'Young Gifted And Black' don't work as well though. For first time, Buster seems to be confused as to what direction to take, and tries to please everyone, without any real success.
