Silvertones - Silver Bullets - Trojan
The deep voiced Delroy Delton, Gilmour Grant , and Keith Coley formed The Silvertones recording mainly for Duke Reid with whom they had a massive hit with ‘Midnight Hour’.
If anyone was going to release an album with the group it should have been Duke Reid.
Yet it was to Lee Perry who released the debut album from the group - and it also represents his first set from a vocal group.
Scratch had worked with a number of vocal groups notably The Bleechers and The Versatiles and had a great deal of success with both groups.
Yet it was to be the Silvertones who got his time and money.
The album itself is very strange - ‘Sugar Sugar’ The pop hit from the Archies works very well. And so does ‘Rejoice Jah Jah Children’ while other don’t gel as well.
What saves the album time and time again is the very very deep vocal tones of Delroy Denton! More than anything it was probably this that turned on Scratch with regards to recording the group.
Not a vital album, but one that worth a check!
