Karl Bryan – Selection
Karl 'King Cannonball' Bryan – played his sax for all the big producers, Coxsone, Duke Reid, Harry J, Harry Mudie, Lynford Anderson – and made more than enough tunes.
He had a big hit with 'Red Ash' for Duke Ried – and yet somehow like so many other great player – he never got around to recording an album.
It shouldn't be a problem with companies around like Trojan who have access to so many different producers works - but for one reason and another it's never happened.
Karl for most of the time likes to 'toot' along – these little broken melodies work very well in reggae music.
Yet sometimes he goes in for a well known melody like 'A House Is Not A Home' made famous by Sugar Minott.
As good as 'Hot Ash' is 'Waking The Dead' for Harry Mudie – its such an unusual rhythm – its amazing that Harry Mudie as not used it again.
'Stagger Back' for George Murphy of The Tennors as got a Beverley's sound and gives the kind of room that Karl's sax playing seems to sound best on.
Truly a shame that Lynford Anderson didn't go for it – and create an album with the man. He did the work!
