The war memorial

By deliberation of June 23, 1920, the Esteville City Council decided as a public tribute to erect a monument to the children of the commune who died for France. Mr. Boulocher mayor was the chairman of the committee for the erection of the monument to the dead.

A subscription was made to cover the costs of this construction. On May 18, 1920, a sum of 2069 francs 10 cts was collected, of which 300 francs were donated by M. le Comte d’Estampes. This sum placed in treasury bills provided 100 frs of interest.

Mr. Paul Girard a marble mason in Saint-Saens presented a plan and an estimate amounting to 2500 frs on April 20, 1920. The 3m high monument would be made all of Lorraine stone with four bollards of the same stone. It would include the sculpture of a war cross and a wreath, the engraving of the dedication to the dead for the homeland and the inscription of six names:

The erection was approved by the prefect on 22 September 1920 "considering that this monument contains no religious signs or emblems" and that "after its erection, it will be handed over to the commune". By deliberation of March 27, 1922, the city council decided that the monument would be raised in a square offered to the commune by Widow Lerat at the crossroads of the road of Bosc le Hard and the Forge. "In addition, donors and authorities will be invited to attend the inauguration ceremony which will take place as soon as possible. Photographs will be taken to be sold for the benefit of the monument. The mayors of neighbouring municipalities and veterans' societies will be invited to attend the inauguration ceremony. A wine of honour will be offered to the demobilized and the guests."

It was later moved near the church.
