Edouard Fortier (1836 - 1915)

Edouard Fortier was born in Saint André sur Cailly (Pibeuf section), on August 18, 1836, to Jean Edouard Fortier, owner and farmer, and Rose Adèle Valle.

As a young farmer, in 1861, he tried the cultivation of flax which was totally unknown in the region. He was awarded for it and married Clémence Maria Deshayes in 1865 in Graville Saint Honorine.

He was appointed judge of the Commercial Court and presided one of its branches. He also became the regional director of the Banque de France in Rouen.

 Not only did he belong to many agricultural organizations:

-Honorary president of the agricultural union of Seine Inférieure in 1882 after having founded it.

- Member of the agricultural committee of the district,

- Member of the Agriculture Academy,

- Member of the Dairy Society

but he also wrote a treatise on agriculture and practical horticulture published in 1889.

He was made Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1884 (then officer in 1897), he was elected senator of Seine Inférieure in July 1898 and remained so until his death on August 11, 1915 at the age of 79.

 In the Senate he devoted much time to agricultural and commercial matters.

For 35 years he lived at No. 10 chemin des Cottes in Mont Saint Aignan. On February 25, 1916 the town renamed the portion of this street between rue Verte and rue Borgnet Edouard Fortier Street.
