The former Saint Maur chapel

Le Café Epicerie « Aux Amis Réunis » Maison G. Bénard au carrefour des Friquets établi sur les fondations de l'ancienne chapelle Saint Maur.

This chapel on the corner of Pierre Mauget road and Les Friquets road seemed to have been neglected since the beginning of the 17th century. The tenants often lived a long way off, had a lot of other expenditures and were not concerned about its upkeep.

After visits iIn 1685 and 1696 the poor condition of its roof, windows and floor was noted. The chapel was ‘damp and rotten’. On his visit in 1717 Monseigneur Claude Maur d’ Abigné found it to be so dilapidated that he prohibited its use. Throughout the 18th century there was a succession of tenants and resignations.

The chapel had been abandoned ‘for twenty years’ when it was sold as national property by the Rouen district on May 20th 1791. The triangular piece of land measured 142 m2 and included a chapel dedicated to St Maur. It was sold to Antoine Peltier de St Nicolas du Verbois, a farmer and cotton merchant in 1821, for 775 L.

Antoine Peltier had renovation works done on the chapel by the Cordelleville family carpentry firm Pierre and Jean-Baptiste Duhamel after a contract signed for 700L on September 17th 1791.

On October 17th 1821 M. D’Epinay bought the whole property from M. Peltier through the notary Me. Mauger.

The chapel became a café-grocery store run by the Bernard family until 1977 when it was sold as a private house.
