The former town hall

Up until 1950 the Town Hall, the Justice of the Peace and the schools were housed in the Clères château. The town then bought the house belonging to Mme Boudeville to set up the Town Hall, a courtroom and a schoolhouse for boys.

The layout of these premises was the following; on the ground floor, successively, a large room, a small room, a kitchen, a staircase, an office, a small cellar and then the classroom, another cellar and the latrines.

The rounded part at the back of the building was a stairway leading to the first floor occupied by the Justice of the Peace courtroom and the Town Hall.On the second floor was an apartment and above that a loft. There was no garden or playground for the school and the classroom looked out directly onto the road.

As from 1852 the court hearings took place in this building.

In 1878 the schoolroom was transferred from the ground floor to the first floor and in 1888 a boys’ school was created in Rue des Jardins (which later was renamed Rue des Ecoles and then Rue Hippolyte Lemarchand).

In 1925 the Town Hall and the Justice of the Peace moved into M. Duthil’s house and on September 19th 1925 the town sold the building by adjudication and it became a grocery store.
