文化心理学者のマイケル・コールと，妻でジャーナリスト（家族・子ども・発達・教育）のシェイラ・コール，社会文化的視点で子どもや青少年の問題を研究するシンシア・ライトフットによる「子どもの発達」に関するハンドブックです。

本書の特徴は，

①生物学的文化的(biocultural)アプローチ

子どもの発達を，生物学的プロセスと文化的プロセスの織り合わされたものとして捉えています。

②実践，理論，研究の統合

子ども（胎児期から青年期まで）の各段階での発達について，身体的・認知的発達，社会的・情動的発達，各時期特有の発達，子どもの発達をとりまく文脈がレビューされています。

③大学生向けのテキスト

幅広く，子どもの発達について網羅されているので子どもの発達の全体像を掴むことができます。表や写真（すべてカラー）も多く，分かりやすいです。

※本文だけで600頁（大型本），参考文献だけでも54頁（各頁に40本以上の文献）と非常に充実した内容です。

文化心理学者の執筆というだけあって様々な文化の子どもたちの写真も掲載されていて，

日本のみならず広い視野から子どもの育ちについて知ることができます。

余談ですが，本書の第一著者ライトフットさんは青年期(adolescence)を日本で過ごしたらしく，早い時期から，文化と行動について関心を抱かれていたそうです。
