講演内容
This lecture will explore the British discovery of coffee and tea-drinking in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Both commodities were exotic and strange to British taste: coffee from the Ottoman empire, and tea from China (though very small parcels from Japan were also known). Within a relatively short period, coffee drinking became almost ubiquitous, especially in the unique sociable form of the coffee-house. The lecture will consider the distinctive qualities of the coffee-house of this time, especially its provision of conversation, news, and of course coffee. A special focus will be The Spectator, an essay periodical by Richard Steele (1672-1729) and Joseph Addison (1672-1719) in 1711-12. Essay number 49 (Thursday, April 26, 1711) discusses The Spectator’s argument that the coffee-house was the location of the polite reform of British morals. The lecture will finish by considering the domestic tea-table, proposed as a more inclusive and polite rival to coffee-house sociability.
[和訳] この講演は十七世紀後半から十八世紀前半にかけて英国人が珈琲とお茶の喫茶を発見したことについて探求していく。珈琲とお茶の両方とも英国人の感覚では異国的で珍奇な物品だったが、珈琲はオスマントルコ帝国から、お茶はシナ（現在の中国）から伝わった物である（尤(もっと)もほんの僅(わず)かながら日本産のお茶も知られてはいたが）。比較的短い期間で珈琲を飲む習慣が殆(ほとん)どあらゆる場所に広がり、それも特に珈琲ハウスという独特な社交の形態を伴うものだった。本講演ではこの時代の珈琲ハウスの際立った特徴についていくつか考察するが、特に座談やニュースの場の提供、それにもちろん珈琲の提供について考察する。特に着目するのは『スペクテイター』（『見物人』の意）誌であり、これはリチャード・スティール（Richard Steele, 1672-1729）とジョウゼフ・アディソン（Joseph Addison, 1672-1719）による1711-12年のエッセイ雑誌である。1711年4月26日(木)号のエッセイ番号49は、珈琲ハウスとは礼節をもって英国人の道徳観を改革する場であるとする『スペクテイター』誌の主張を論じている。本講演の締め括(くく)りとして、家庭で使われた茶卓(ティーテーブル)を考察するが、これは珈琲ハウスの持つ社交性に対して、より間口の広い、礼節ある対抗軸として提起された物である。（原田俊明訳）
