西曆1932年12月25日(日・祝) グリニッヂ標準時15:00　英国王ジョージ五世の第1回聖誕祭メッセージ

1922年10月18日(水)に設立されて間もない英国放送協会（BBC: British Broadcasting Corporation）が翌年（1923年）の聖誕祭祝日（Christmas Day）＝1923年12月25日(火・祝)に国王ジョージ五世（George V, 1865-1936; 在位1910-36）の肉声を英国内及び全英領殖民地の臣民（しんみん: subjects）に向けて放送しましょうと提案したものの、当の国王自身の反対に遭い実現せず、九年後に同国王の側が折れたことで1932年12月25日(日・祝)に漸(ようや)く聖誕祭メッセージ（Christmas message）の第一回放送が始まった。

原稿を書いたのが1907年ノーベル文学賞（典 Nobelpriset i litteratur 1907; 英 Nobel Prize in Literature 1907）受賞者のラドヤード・キプリング（Rudyard Kipling, 1865-1936）であることが判明している。そしてジョージ五世もキプリングも共に1865年生まれ（前者が6月3日(土)生まれ、後者が12月30日(土)生まれ）で、歿年も同じ1936年（前者が1月20日(月)歿、後者が1月18日(土)歿）である。

Through one of the marvels of modern Science, I am enabled, this Christmas Day, to speak to all my peoples throughout the Empire. I take it as a good omen that Wireless should have reached its present perfection at a time when the Empire has been linked in closer union. For it offers us immense possibilities to make that union closer still.

現代科学の驚異を通して、私は可能になりました。この聖誕祭(クリスマス)の日に帝国の隅々の我が人民たちに話しかけることがです。私は帝国がより緊密な統合で繋(つな)がれている現在、無線電信（＝ラジオ放送）が現状の完璧さに至ったことは良き兆候だと捉(とら)えています。というのも、それ（＝ラジオ放送）はその統合を更に緊密にしてくれる膨大な可能性を我々に提供するからです。

It may be that our future, ahem, will lay upon us more than one stern test. Our past will have taught us how to meet it unshaken. For the present, the work to which we are all equally bound is to arrive at a reasoned tranquillity within our borders; to regain prosperity without self-seeking; and to carry with us those whom the burden of past years has disheartened or overborne.

もしかすると我々の未来は、ゴホン（咳払い）、一つの厳正な試験（＝今回のラジオ放送のこと）以上の物を我々に齎(もたら)してくれるのかも知れません。我々の過去は、それ（＝過去）に揺るぎない状態で向き合うように教えてきました。現在については、我々皆が平等に縛られている仕事は、我々の国境の内側に理性ある静けさをもって到達することであり、自分本位にならずに繁栄を取り戻すこと（＝三年前の1929年秋以降の世界的不景気からの脱却）であり、過去数年間の重荷に意気消沈させられたり、押し潰されたりした人々を一緒に抱え上げることです。

My life’s aim has been to serve as I might, towards those ends. Your loyalty, your confidence in me has been my abundant reward.

我が人生の目的は、できる限りそれらの目的に向かって奉仕することでありました。諸君の忠誠心、諸君の私への信頼は、私の膨大な見返りとなってきました。

I speak now from my home and from my heart to you all. To men and women so cut off by the snows, the desert or the sea, that only voices out of the air can reach them; to those cut off from fuller life by blindness, sickness, or infirmity; and to those who are celebrating this day with their children and their grand-children. To all — to each — I wish a Happy Christmas.

私は今、我が自宅から、そして心から諸君全員に向けて話しかけます。雪や砂漠や海で隔(へだ)てられ、声だけが空気中から到達できる男女の諸君へ、盲目や病(やまい)や身体障碍(しんたい しょうがい)の所為(せい)で人生のフル稼働から遮断されている諸君へ、そしてこの日（＝12月25日の聖誕祭祝日）を子供たちや孫たちと祝っている諸君へ。全員に、そして一人ひとりに、幸(さち)多きクリスマスを。
