There was a time when British Olympic medal winners became household names because there were so few of them. But the 67 medals at this year’s games in Rio and 147 in the Paralympics meant that the GB medalists’ reception at Buckingham Palace was a crowded and happy event.
オリンピックの英国人メダリストの名が広く一般家庭に知れ渡った時代もかつてはありました。それというのも人数がとても少なかったからです。しかし今年（2016年）のリオ大会での67個のオリンピック・メダルと147個のパラリンピック・メダルが意味したのは、バッキンガム宮殿での GB （英国）メダリストのための祝宴が大盛会(だいせいかい)になったということです。
Throughout the Commonwealth, there were equally joyful celebrations. Grenada, the Bahamas, Jamacia and New Zealand won more medals by heads of population than any other countries.
英連邦の至るところで同様に喜びに満ちたお祝いがありました。（英連邦の）グレナダやバハマやジャマイカやニュージーランドは、その人口規模に換算すれば他のいかなる国よりも多くのメダルを獲得しました。
Many of this year’s winners spoke of being inspired by athletes of previous generations. Inspiration fed to their aspiration and having discovered abilities they scarcely knew they had, these athletes are now inspiring others.
今年の勝者の多くは、前の世代の競技者(アスリート)たちから感化(インスパイヤ)されたのだと話していました。感化(インスピレイション)が大望(アスピレイション)に精神的な糧(かて)を与え、自分でも持っているとは殆(ほとん)ど知らなかった能力を発見したことで、これらの競技者(アスリート)たちは今では他の人々を感化しているのです。
A few months ago I had some inspiration of a different kind when I opened the new Cambridge base of the East Anglian Air Ambulance where Prince William works as a helicopter pilot. It was not hard to be moved by the dedication of the highly skilled doctors, paramedics and crew who are called out on average five times a day.
二、三ヶ月前、私は孫のウィリアム王子がヘリコプター操縦士として勤務しているイーストアングリア航空救急[註1]が新たにケイムブリヂ基地を開所した際に異なる種類の感化(インスピレイション)を受けました。皆さんの献身ぶりにはすぐにも心を打たれないわけには参りません。高い技能を持った医師・救急隊員・乗組員の皆さんが一日平均五回も出動要請を受けると聞けば。

But to be inspirational, you don’t have to save lives or win medals. I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Volunteers, carers, community organisers, and good neighbours. Unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special. They are an inspiration to those who know them, and their lives frequently embody a truth expressed by Mother Teresa, from this year St Teresa of Calcutta. She once said “not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
しかし人に感化(インスピレイション)を与えるのに他人の命を救うとか、メダルを獲得するとかいった必要はありません。私は屡々(しばしば)尋常ではないことをしているごく普通の人に会うことで力[註2]を貰っています。ボランティア、介護人、地域社会のまとめ役、それに良き隣人たちです。その静かな献身ぶりが特別な存在たらしめている陰の功労者[註3]たちです。こうした人を知る者にとって、彼らは感化(インスピレイション)であり、彼らの人生は屡々(しばしば)マザー・テレサ、今年（2016年）からは列聖されてカルカッタ[註4]の聖テレサ[註5]ですが、彼女によって表明された真実を具現化するのです。聖テレサは或(あ)る時こう言いました。「私たちの誰もが偉大なことができるわけではありませんが、私たちにできるのは小さなことをするのに大きな愛を込めることです。」
註2: 原文では strength だが、和製英語を用いて訳すと「パワー」となる。

註4: インド東部のベンガル地方の最大都市。インド政府は白人支配者が用いたカルカッタ（Calcutta）という地名ではなく、コルカタ（Kolkata）と呼ぶよう主張しているが、ヴァティカン（バチカン）はそれを無視している。
註5: マザー・テレサ（Mother Teresa, 1910-97）は第一次世界大戦前の1910年にオスマン帝国支配下のスコピエ（現在のマケドニアの首都）にアルバニア系住民のアニェゼ・ゴンジャ・ボヤジウ（Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, 1910-97）として生まれた。1931年に修道女としてインドに渡り、1950年からは独自の修道会を設立してインドの貧しい人々のために尽くした。晩年にはダイアナ妃（Diana, Princess of Wales, 1961-97）とも親交があったが、1997年にダイアナ妃の不慮の事故死（享年36）から五日後に病歿（享年87）した。歿後十九年目を迎える前日である2016年9月4日(日)にヴァティカン（バチカン）がマザー・テレサを列聖（canonise）し、聖人（a saint）であると宣言したことにより、マザー・テレサは「カルカッタの聖テレサ」（羅 Sancta Teresia Calcuttensis; 英 Saint Teresa of Calcutta）となった。
This has been the experience of two remarkable organisations: The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and The Prince’s Trust, which are 60 and 40 years old this year. These started as small initiatives, but have grown beyond any expectations and continue to transform young people’s lives.
このこと（＝小さなことをするのに大きな愛を込めること）は2つの特筆すべき団体、エディンバラ公賞とウェールズ大公信託のこれまでの仕事ぶりに見られます。それぞれが今年（2016年）で60年と40年の歴史を有しています。これらは小さな先駆け事業として始まりましたが、今や予想以上に成長し、若者たちの人生を一変させ続けています。
To mark my 90th birthday, volunteers and supporters of the 600 charities, of which I have been Patron, came to a lunch in The Mall. Many of these organisations are modest in size, but inspire me with the work they do. From giving friendship and support to our veterans, the elderly or the bereaved, to championing music and dance, providing animal welfare, or protecting our fields and forests. Their selfless devotion and generosity of spirit is an example to us all.
私の90歳の誕生日を祝うため、私が主要支援者(パトロン)をしている600の慈善団体のボランティアや後援者(サポーター)の方々が、ザ・マル[註6]まで昼食会に来られました。これらの団体の多くは小規模な物ですが、その仕事ぶりは私を感化(インスパイヤ)します。我が国の退役軍人や高齢者や遺族への友情と支援(サポート)の提供から、音楽やダンス（の大切さ）の擁護や、動物への福祉の提供や、我が国の野原や森林の保護までが含まれます。彼らの私利私欲のない献身ぶりと精神の寛大さは、私たち皆の模範です。
註6: 東のトラファルガー広場（Trafalgar Square）から西のバッキンガム宮殿（Buckingham Palace）建物正面（façade ファサード）に通じる樹木の多い直線街路。英女王自身や国賓（他国の国王や天皇や大統領）がバッキンガム宮殿に出入りする際に必ず通る道でもある。
When people face a challenge, they sometimes talk about taking a deep breath to find courage or strength. In fact, the word ‘inspire’ literally means to breathe in. But even with the inspiration of others, it’s understandable that we sometimes think the world’s problems are so big that we can do little to help.
人は難題に直面すると、勇気や力を見出すために深呼吸することを時折語っています。実際に inspire （インスパイヤ）という単語は字義通りには息を吸い込むことを意味します。しかし他人からの感化(インスピレイション)があったにしても、私たちが時折世界の諸問題は大きすぎて殆(ほとん)ど手に負えないと思ってしまうのも無理はありません。
On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice. But, the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.
自分だけの力では戦争を終わらせることも不正義を払拭(ふっしょく)することもできません。しかしながら、何千もの小さな善行が堆積(たいせき)して集まった衝撃的効果(インパクト)は、私たちが頭で思い描くよりも大きく成りえます。
At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby some 2000 years ago. It was the humblest of beginnings, and his parents, Joseph and Mary, did not think they were important. Jesus Christ lived in obscurity for most of his life and never travelled far. He was maligned and rejected by many, though he had done no wrong.
クリスマスでは、私たちの注意は約二千年前に生まれた赤子(あかご)[註7]に向けられます。それは始まりの中でも最もつつましい始まりでした。それに彼（＝イエス）の両親であるヨセフとマリアは自分たちが重要人物だとは思っていませんでした。イエス・キリストは人生の大半を世に知られず生きて、遠くへ旅したこともありませんでした。彼（＝イエス）は多くの人から罵(ののし)られ、拒絶されました。何も悪いことをしなかったのにです。

And yet, billions of people now follow his teaching, and find in him their guiding light of their lives. I am one of them because Christ’s example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them, and whatever themselves believe.
しかしながら、何十億もの人々が今では彼（＝イエス）の教えに従い、彼（＝イエス）の中に自分の人生の導きの光を見出しているのです。私もそのひとりです。というのも、キリストの模範が小さなことをするのに大きな愛を込めることの価値を見出すのを助けてくれるからです。それが誰によって為(な)されようと、また、その人自身が何を信じていようと。
The message of Christmas reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received. And that love begins small, but always grows.
クリスマスのメッセージが私たちに思い出させてくれるのは、感化(インスピレイション)が贈られる贈り物であり、また、受け取られる贈り物であるということです。その愛は始まりこそ小さいですが、決まって大きくなります。

1922年10月18日(水)に設立されて間もない英国放送協会（BBC: British Broadcasting Corporation）が翌年（1923年）の聖誕祭祝日（Christmas Day）＝1923年12月25日(火・祝)に国王の肉声を全国民及び全殖民地に向けて放送しましょうと提案したものの、当の国王ジョージ五世（George V, 1865-1936; 在位1910-36）自身の反対に遭い実現せず、九年後に同国王の側が妥協したことで1932年12月25日(日・祝)に漸(ようや)く聖誕祭メッセージ（Christmas message）の第一回放送（ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf30P_PbcZo ）が始まったという歴史を振り返る。1957年には初の（白黒）テレビ放送版聖誕祭メッセージも実現した。なお、日本の一般国民が天皇の肉声をラジオで初めて聞いたのは、イギリスより十三年近く遅れた1945年8月15日(水) 正午の所謂(いわゆる)「玉音(ぎょくおん)放送」である。
