1) English ブリテン島イングランド語
印欧語族のゲルマン語派の西ゲルマン語群に属する英語
連合王国の事実上の公用語だが法律上の公用語でない（the de facto official language of the United Kingdom but not the de jure official language）。また、アメリカ合衆国の事実上の公用語だが法律上の公用語でない（the de facto official language of the United States of America but not the de jure official language）。英連邦（Commonwealth of Nations; 通称 British Commonwealth）のカナダではフランス語と並ぶ二つの法律上の公用語のうちの一つ（one of the de jure official languages of Canada along with French）。
Many people think Britain is just one island. In fact it is a country of many islands which are diverse in character, language and landscape.

4) Welsh ブリテン島ウェールズ語
印欧語族のケルト語派に属する言語の一つ
連合王国で唯一の法律上の公用語（the only de jure official language of the United Kingdom）であるが、ウェールズ総人口の三割弱（29.1％）が会話可能で、他にイングランド在住のウェールズ人や、アルゼンチン南部やカナダに移住したウェールズ系住民が話す。

5) Scottish Gaelic ブリテン島スコットランド・ゲール語

フランス共和国をはじめとする29ヶ国の公用語で、その中には英連邦（Commonwealth of Nations; 通称 British Commonwealth）のカメルーンやカナダも含まれる。
Beaucoup de gens pensent que la Grande-Bretagne est une seule île. En fait, c’est un pays de nombreuses îles qui sont diverse dans le caractère, la langue et le paysage.

英国は一つの島だと思い込んでいる人が多いが、実際にはその特徴や言語や風景に於いて多岐にわたる多くの島々から成る国である。

因(ちな)みに隣国のフランスでは、第一次世界大戦（仏 Première Guerre mondiale, 1914-18）が勃発した1914年になっても、フランス語（ラテン系の大言語）、ドイツ語（ゲルマン系の大言語）、アルザス語（ゲルマン系のドイツ語の変種）、ブルトン語（ケルト系のブルターニュ半島語）、バスク語（スペインにも分布する系統不明な言語）、オック語（ラテン系の南仏語）、カタロニア語（ラテン系のスペイン語とフランス語の中間的な言語）、コルシカ語（ラテン系の言語）という8つの言語が話されていた。ところが1890年に導入された初等教育の義務化による段階的な効果と、第一次世界大戦による兵士動員のお蔭で、フランス全土でフランス語が話されるようになっていき、今日に至っている。（Atlas de la langue française, 1995 に依拠）
