Shalom, dear all!
Thank you for praying faithfully for us. We came back to Ambunti last Tuesday. The shopping tasks in Wewak, POM and Cairns went well. We visited Tony & JoJo’s family and Tian En Methodist Church while we were shortly in POM that have been receiving my updates and praying according to my prayer requests since 2011. And we had a good time of kind of 2-day-long retreat in the TreeTops Lodge while we stayed in Cairns.
When we were to come back to Ambunti from Wewak, we were threatened on the hill road to the airport by some gangsters pointing to us with a pistol, opening the car door and trying to make us stop. Thank God that Douglas kept on driving and successfully have us break away from them before we realized we could have been killed. And then, we were heading towards the airport, knowing that there would be a series of aftershock.
After that I was sick for a week, feeling weak, having nightmares, having a fever and having a headache. Today, I finally feel well.
Beverlyn and Jennifer came to see me last Thursday while I was still having a bad fever. Beverlyn’s wound cause by an arrow on the leg had been healed. The sequelae was that her right leg was numbed and could not lift high or walk fast. Jennnifer’s wounds on the right arm caused by bush knife were healed but the swellings had not subsided. Thus, it will take time for her to rehabilitate. Though both if them have their physical limitation, they have come to help me cleaning the fish, do the laundry and clean up the house. I have totally recovered from the sickness and will restart the class on Friday.
The police eventually came to Ambunti and dealt with the riot that happened on June 10th. Nine of the trouble makers have been put in jail. But others have fled away. Many houses in the villages were burned down, including all Jennifer’s relatives’ houses in Ambunti. Now, Jennifer and 3 of her kids were staying in an abandoned house. Two of her daughters got married young after Jennifer’s husband abandoned the family. When the house was on fire, Jennifer was in my class and three of her children were at home. They managed to escape the fire after hearing the neighbors yelled, “Fire!!!” It was good that the youngest had gone to stay with his married sister in the town. Or the tragedy could have been worse. We feel bad that many innocent people like Beverlyn and Jennifer are suffering for what evil have done by their relatives, and something like this happens very often in PNG. This is one of the Bible lessons I have learned from this event: When the Bible say “…fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury…--- Lev.24:20” It doesn’t mean that retaliation must be taken. On the contrary, it reminds people that evildoing would cause certain consequences as well as ensures that the punishment should not exceed the offense. And now I understand that it also reminds people that the punishment should not be put to innocent relatives.
When Jennifer came last Thursday, I saw her wearing a T-shirt with a offending picture at the front. I was wondering why and asked if she had another top to put on for the photo shot. Then she took a meri blaus (PNG woman’s dress) out of her bag and changed. It was not until the next day that I realized what it was when someone’s house was burned down. That means they have lost everything and everything, especially for people who never own any bank accounts. They have no choice but to have whatever is given. Then I was recalled that the meri blaus she had taken out of her bag was the one she was wearing when I last saw her. Without hesitation, I gave her what I saw in my house that she needed to restart her life. Clothes, bed sheets, buckets……… And I am still thinking what else she would need that I can give. Then I became clearer with the Bible I read. Before, when I read the verse, 'Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.', I was wondering how I could have done that as I never needed only one tunic, and I never could have had enough to give to so many people in need. Now, I know that God simply emphasizing a spirit of sharing and compassion. I am glad to see Jennifer took seriously what I had taught her about financial management. She set aside some money I gave her and would use it as the “seeds” for the future harvest. Today, she came to Merolyn, the staff I had assigned to manage the sewing resources, and bought some fabric. Tomorrow, she is going to come and rent the sewing machine and sew some meri blaus and then sell them in the market. She told me excitedly that she could do the sewing though her left arm is still quite stiff. What an awesome sister!
然後她從包包裡拿出一件 Meri Blaus(新幾內亞婦女的連身裙),換了衣服。
