Meeting of Protestant Dissenters at Alfreton

25 June 1789

fol. 18.  Printed copy of the resolutions passed at the initial meeting of Dissenting Ministers from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and a part of Yorkshire, signed by  George Walker at Alfreton, 25 June 1789, and sent to Wood.

The delegates reiterate the claims of the Dissenters against the Test and Corporation Acts, that they are discriminatory and abusive of their rights against the original intention of the Act of 1688.   These Acts are “a disgrace to our country” and “a violation of our equal right.” They thank Fox and Beaufoy for their efforts in repeal, and the London Committee, and they wish to correspond with the other committees around the country.  George Walker was chosen as their chairman. Other committee members included the Rev. Messrs. Astley, Plumbe, Smith, Hoppar, Entwistle, Smith, Goddard, and Smith.
