Hastings, Baptists

Hastings, Baptists -- Joseph Fletcher of Limehouse Docks, Tottenham, and his daughter were instrumental in founding the church in 1836. P. J. Saffery was invited in July 1836 and subsequently became the minister. He established a Sunday School and a British School and preached at Fairlight (1). A chapel was built in Wellington Square (with money from Fletcher) and opened in May 1838 (1). Saffery resigned in 1841, and was replaced by J. M. Cramp (2). The Rev. W. Evans was pastor there after 1847, and was succeeded by Dr. Gray, but he resigned in 1850. See Lights and Shades. A Brief History of Wellington Square Church, Hastings.
