William Innes

William Innes (1770-1855) was originally a minister in the Church of Scotland at Sterling; he was removed from his position in 1799 and after a brief stint at Dundee, accepted the position as pastor of the Scotch Baptist congregation in Elder Street, Edinburgh (his sister was the first wife of Greville Ewing). He also operated as a bookseller and was the author of numerous theological publications.  John Aikman (d. 1834) was a university student who joined with James Haldane and others in 1797 in forming the Society for Propagating the Gospel at Home, devoting his time thereafter to evangelistic outreach, tutoring ministerial students, and preaching primarily at the Independent church in North College Street, Edinburgh. According to John Julian, Aikman compiled A Collection of Hymns for the Use of Tabernacles in Scotland, published in Edinburgh in 1800 by John Ritchie, the printer/bookseller mentioned above by Fuller; see John Julian, A Dictionary of Hymnology (London: J. Murray, 1892), 1027.
