James Smith

James Smith (1770-1850), a native of Cornwall, was called to the ministry at seventeen. After studying at Bristol Academy, he began his pastoral work at Pershore, Worcestershire. After a brief stint at Alcester, Warwickshire, he removed to Astwood, Worcestershire, in 1813, where he remained the rest of his life. An entry in the BMS Committee Minutes on 17 February 1842 notes that Smith contributed £50, but that was probably from a collection in his church. In February 1844, his contribution was only £1. See BMS Committee Minutes, Vol. H (Oct. 1841-Dec. 1842), f. 78; Missionary Herald (April 1844), 220.
