Robert Williams

Robert Williams [pseud. Robert ap Gwilym Ddu] (1766–1850) was a poet and hymn writer who wrote at times under the pseudonym Robert ap Gwilym Ddu. He was originally from Caernarvonshire. He knew the work of Rhys Jones and Goronwy Owen well and was a practitioner of the strict Welsh metre. He tutored David Owen (1784-1821) in the bardic tradition. Williams’s poems were gathered and published in 1841 as Gardd Eifion. One of his hymns was published in Seren Gomer in 1824, and 22 in J. R. Jones’s Aleluia, neu, Caniadau Cristionogol (1822).
