Christopher Palmer

Christopher Palmer (1741-1808) was most likely a member of the Baptist congregation at Dean Street. He was a hatter and feltman in partner with the firm Moxon (his father-in-law, for his wife was Sarah Moxon), Palmer, and Norman at 40 Cannon Street, London, and an adjacent property at 2 Martin’s Lane (a Fire Assurance Policy dated from there on 26 January 1795 and another one on 26 March 1800). For many years Christopher Palmer and his family lived at 19 Crosby Row, Walworth (his policy with the Sun Fire Office is dated 27 December 1793), not far from the family of Mary Hays in Gainsford Street or that of John Dunkin, Hays's brother-in-law, after his removal to 2 Paragon Place. His son, Samuel Palmer (1775-1848), the father of the Romantic artist, Samuel Palmer (1805-81), resided after his marriage in 1803 in nearby Beckford Row, where he and his family attended the Baptist meeting in East Street. Christopher Palmer was listed as a ‘Hatter of Walworth, Surrey” in his will.
