Rebecca Travers

Rebecca Travers (c. 1609–1688) was Quaker preacher and writer. She was the daughter of a Baptist and attended the Baptist meeting in Broad Street, London, but was led into Quakerism by James Naylor.  Naylor stayed at her house in 1659. She became a prominent Quaker preacher in London, and was imprisoned on several occasions.  She later hosted such Quaker leaders as George Whitehad and George Fox. She was the author of ten pamphlets, at one point attempting to reconcile the followers of Fox and those of John Perrot, the antinomian. She believed in the primacy of faith over religious institutions. William Penn preached her funeral in London. Among her writings are A Woman's Paper for Order, For those that meet to worship at the Steeple-House, called John Evangelist in London (1659), A Testimony Concerning the Life and Light of Jesus (1663), This is for All … that Resist the Spirit (1664), and The Harlot's Vail Rent (1669).
