John Tommas

John Tommas (1723/1724-1800) was born near Skipton, Yorkshire. He was raised by parents who were originally Anglicans but became dissenters, eventually joining the Baptist church at Barnoldswick, during the ministry of Alvery Jackson, under whom Tommas was converted, baptized and educated. Tommas was called out to the ministry in 1745 and ordained at Gildersome in 1747, his first pastorate. He came to the church in the Pithay in Bristol in 1753, replacing the aged John Beddome, and remained there until his death in 1800. See “Sketch of the Life of the Late Rev. John Tommas, Pastor of the Baptist Church in the Pithay, Bristol,” Annual Register 3 (1798-1800), 313-319.
