Capt. Morcom

Capt. Morcom appears in William Steadman’s diary during one of his itinerating sojourns in Cornwall in August 1797.  Concerning the fledgling Baptist congregation at Chacewater, Steadman writes, “Went afterwards to Chasewater, and preached in the Baptist meeting … with a good deal of liberty and comfort. The house was very crowded, and a few stood without. Suppose there was upwards of 400; found it a solemn, pleasing opportunity … Went afterwards to Wheal Virgin, a mine to which one of the Chasewater people, Captain Morcom, belongs. It is one of the largest mines in the county, having upwards of 700 men employed in it.” See Steadman, Memoir of the Rev. William Steadman, 167.
