Edward Evan [Evans]

Edward Evan [Evans] (1716-98) was a nonconformist minister and poet from Glamorgan. He apprenticed as a carpenter under Lewis Hopkin and through their relationship he continued his interest in tradition of the Welsh bard and entered into religious nonconformity. Evan translated a number of English poems into Welsh. He began an orthodox Calvinist, then became an Arminian and eventually an Arian. Politically he was also fairly radical. He published some prose works and, with Hopkin, a Welsh translation of Ecclesiastes (1767).  Several editions of his poetry appeared after his death. He and Iolo Morganwg were declared by the Gentleman’s Magazine in November 1789 to be the only remaining descendants of the ‘Ancient British Bards’.
