Windeatts of Bridgetown

Windeatts of Bridgetown. According to Edward Windeatt, in 1791, “in consequence of Mr Baynham’s  [pastor of the Independent church in Totness] adopting Unitarian views” (9), several members seceded and formed a new congregation. These seceding Independents met initially at Bridgetown in the house of Samuel Windeatt, one of the members from the former church. Windeatt, along with his son, Samuel, Jr., and other members of the Windeatt family were instrumental in acquiring the site for a new chapel. William Chaplin, prior to his arrival at Bishop Stortford, served as the congregation’s initial pastor, 1793-97. See Edward Windeatt,  A Sketch of Early Congregationalism in Totnes (Totnes, 1883), 9.
