George Head,  Jr.

George Head, Jr. (b. c. 1778), was the son of Marianna Attwater Head of Bradford, Philip Whitaker’s aunt and sister to Jane Attwater Blatch. He would suffer from bouts of insanity for most of his life, eventually being sent to the Fishponds in Bristol, under the care of Dr. Joseph Mason Cox (1763-1818), and finally to a mental institution in London prior to his death c. 1811. His sister, Marianna Jane Head (d. 1857), remained unmarried until late in life, when she became the second wife of the celebrated Independent minister at Bath, William Jay.  For more on George and Marianna Head, see Timothy Whelan, ed., Nonconformist Women Writers, 1720-1840, 8 vols.
