Soroop

Soroop was about 20 years of age at the time of his conversion. His father was a Gosaic, “or great Goroo,” and had many followers, according to William Ward’s journal as printed in the Periodical Accounts. “This man had four or five disciples with him,” William Ward writes. “He wore two malas, (or necklaces) one of which had large beads, made of the wood of the sacred Toolsee tree. He has a number of disciples at Serampore.” Soroop’s baptism was a significant moment in the early history of the Serampore mission. See Periodical Accounts, 3:44-45.
