Joseph Hunter

Joseph Hunter (1783–1861) was a Presbyterian minister, antiquary and record scholar. He was raised by Joseph Evans, the local Presbyterian minister at Sheffield at that time. Hunter entered New College, York, in 1805 to study for the Presbyterian ministry, which began at Trim Street in Bath in 1809, remaining there until 1832. He was a leading member of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution. His initial work was in recording antiquarian histories of Yorkshire. In 1833 he moved to London, having been appointed subcommissioner of the public records. In 1840 he became Assistant Keeper of the New Public Record Office, established by parliament in 1838. He was a prominent member of the Society of Antiquaries, and studied English literature.
