Tuthill Stairs, Newcastle, Baptist Church

Tuthill Stairs, Newcastle, Baptist Church – In 1786, William Pendered came to the church, then at Tuthill Stairs, with Langdon of Leeds participating in his ordination (5).  Under Pendered’s ministry young Joseph Kinghorn, working in Newcastle for a Mr. Fishwick, a member of the church, was converted and sent to Bristol Academy, mostly at Fishwick’s expense.  Pendered resigned in 1790 over some conflict in the church, and William Hartley supplied for a brief time; he was succeeded by John Foster, fresh from Bristol Academy, but he remained only a short time.  He was replaced by Mr. Skinner, who left in 1795, and then Mr. Thomas Hasswell came from Plymouth (5).  The above account taken from John Bradburn, The History of Bewick Street Baptist Church (Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1883).
