Samuel Bowden

Samuel Bowden (fl. 1733-1761), physician and poet from Frome, Somerset, was a friend of Elizabeth Rowe and lived in her house after her death. He was, like Rowe, a member of the nonconformist congregation at Frome. His brother, John Bowden (d. 1750), was a Presbyterian minister and preached Rowe’s funeral sermon at Rook Lane, the church in Frome. He published two volumes of poetry, Poetical Essays on Several Occasions (2 vols, 1733, 1735), and Poems on Various Subjects (1754). Some poems appeared in the Gentleman’s Magazine.
