R. Roberts

 R. Roberts was the author of Sermons written by a Lady, the Translatress of Four Select Tales from Marmontel (London, 1770). Nothing is known of her other than this one book. Her seven sermons include warnings about excessive concern with riches (Sermon 1) and admonishment to youth to ‘honour thy father and mother’ (Sermon VI), both alluded to by Scott. Her other work is Select Moral Tales. Translated from the French, by a Lady (Gloucester, 1763), published anonymously with a dedicatory epistle to Elizabeth Montagu.  In the footnote for the 1774 and 1775 texts of The Female Advocate, the closing quotation mark after ‘Lady’ was omitted.
