George Lance

George Lance (1802-64) was a Baptist still-life artist. He attended the John Street Baptist Chapel and from 1850 worshiped at the Baptist church in Bloomsbury. He was a fellow student with Lanseer in Haydon's studio, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1828 and at various times between 1835 and 1862. S. M. Peto was a patron for his new house at Somerleyton, as was Lord Shaftesbury and others. Lance served as a trustee at Bloomsbury and was particularly interested in the chapel's day schools. His pupils included Sir John Gilbert and William Duffield. See George C. Williamson, Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers (New York: Macmillan; London: George Bell, 1903), 3. 167-68.
