Miss Atchison

Miss Atchison was the cousin of Mary Reid (1759-1839), Elizabeth Coltman’s close friend from Leicester and sister of Dr. John Reid (1763-1822), the Unitarian doctor in London known to many Romantic writers as well as Henry Crabb Robinson. Reid and Atchison were constant companions for most of their lives, and after the death of their parents (and Reid’s brothers), the two women formed a pact that whichever one outlived the other, that individual should inherit all the property of both families, which included property in Leicester, London, and Glasgow. Atchison died first, leaving Mary Reid an even wealthier woman that she already was.  See Robert Reid [Senex], Old Glasgow and its Environs (Glasgow: David Robertson; London: Longman, 1864), 53-55.
