Timothy Priestley

Timothy Priestley (1734-1814) was originally from Yorkshire. He was trained by James Scott at the Heckmondwike Independent Academy in Yorkshire. He was the Independent minister at Thornton in Yorkshire from 1765-1784, then at Cannon Street, Manchester, 1784-87, then for a brief time at the Lock Chapel, Dublin, in 1787, before coming to London, where he served as the Independent minister at Jewin Street from 1787 to 1814. He was the brother of the celebrated Unitarian minister, Joseph Priestley. He also edited for a time two periodicals, The Christian’s Magazine and The Christian’s Looking-Glass. After the death of his first wife, Priestley married the former Martha Lewis Trapp, who operated a printing and bookselling establishment at 1 Paternoster Row.
