Charles Short

Charles Short (d. 1802) was an agent for the East India Company at Debhatta, about forty miles from Calcutta. Upon Carey’s arrival in India, Short offered the group his home as a temporary habitation. Short would later marry Carey’s sister, Catherine (who had traveled with the Carey’s to India), on 15 November 1794. Though a Deist when he met Carey, Short was converted and spent his remaining years assisting in the work of the BMS in India.  He and his wife left India in 1798, due to Short’s declining health, but he returned, much to Carey’s surprise, in 1801, only to die the next year. Catherine Short returned from India and settled at Clipston, remaining there until her death. See Payne and Allan, Clipston Baptist Church, 11.
