Abraham Greenwood

Abraham Greenwood (1749-1827) was originally from Barnoldswick. He became one of John Fawcett’s first ministerial students at Wainsgate. Greenwood married Alvery Jackson’s daughter and became the first pastor at Rochdale in 1775. He removed to Dudley in 1780 and later to Oakham, where he ministered from 1787 to 1796. He then removed to South Killingholme, Lincolnshire, serving as pastor of the Baptist church there until his death in 1827. He was one of a select group of pastors who was present at the formation of the Baptist Missionary Society at Kettering in 1792. He was probably the son of John Greenwood, a deacon in the Baptist church at Barnoldswick. See Arthur S. Langley, “Abraham Greenwood, 1749-1827,” Baptist Quarterly 2 (1924-1925), 84-89; E.
