Mary Andrews

Mary Andrews (d. 1795) and her husband, William, were members of the Baptist congregation at Olney and were instrumental in bringing John Sutcliff to Olney as pastor of their congregation in 1775. William Andrews died on 8 February 1787. Sutcliff lived in the Andrews’s home until his marriage in 1795, which followed shortly after Mrs. Andrews’s death on 9 March 1795. Her sister, Hannah (d. 1814), was married to William Bull, Independent minister at Newport Pagnall. Michael Haykin notes that Mrs. Andrews had requested Sutcliff not to preach a funeral sermon on her behalf; the midnight timing of the funeral, however, though unusual today, was not uncommon at that time.
