James Davis

James Davis was a member at Brown Street in the 1770s. Davises would continue to appear on the subscription rolls of the church into the 1830s, and members of the family surface on several occasions in Saffery correspondence in Whelan, Nonconformist Women Writers, vol. 6. The Davises of Salisbury at the turn of the nineteenth century were mostly involved in the woolen and linen trade, with businesses operated by both male and female members of the family: Ann Davis, woolen draper; Hugh Davis, woolen draper; Richard Davis, upholsterer; and William Davis, lace manufacturer, all appear in the Universal British Directory (1791), 4.560.
