Jane Whitmarsh

Jane Whitmarsh (d. 1779) was admitted to the Baptist church at Broughton on 15 March 1758; Elizabeth Wade (d. 1769) joined the same day. Both women were working at that time in the Steele household, and thus would have interacted with Mary during her early years, as she mentions in this passage. A Joseph Whitmarsh (most likely Jane’s brother, for her mother, also Jane [d. 1766] was listed in the Church Book as a “widow”) worked for William Steele (see below, letter 17). Jane Whitmarsh would marry William Morrant, another employee of William Steele (see below, letter 15). Both women were both dead by the time Steele composed her spiritual autobiography.
