James Mathews 

James Mathews (1742?-1804) was a bookseller, stationer and bookbinder, 18 Strand 1774-1804. His wife, Elizabeth, continued the business for a year on her own, then it became Mathews and Leigh (her son-in-law, Samuel Leigh), 1807-14. He was a Methodist lay preacher in a chapel of his own in Whetstone, where he became known as "Bishop Mathews."
