Thomas Arnold of Leicester

Thomas Arnold (1742-1816) was a physician in Leicester, best known for his asylum for the insane. Among his writings are Observations on the Nature, Kinds, Causes, and Prevention of Insanity, Lunacy, or Madness (1782; 1786); A Case of Hydrophobia Successfully Treated (1793); and Observations on the Management of the Insane (1809).  Arnold, a Dissenter, chaired the Leicester committee for the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts in 1790. He also treated Robert Hall at his asylum during his bout with insanity c. 1805-06.
