James Davidson

James Davidson and Son were ropemakers at 27 Fish Street Hill, London (Lowndes’s [1787]: 45; UBD 1[Part 2]: 121; Kent’s [1800]: 52).  Most likely Davidson was a Baptist, for he subscribed, as did Flower’s family, to J. C. Ryland’s Contemplations in 1778 (see “List of Subscribers”) and was a friend of Robert Hall (see letter 75). Upon the death of Davidson’s wife in February 1800, Flower wrote, “her family and friends, and the poor, well know her worth, which renders any panegyric on her character unnecessary” (Cambridge Intelligencer 15 February 1800).
