Course for potential qualified markers

Post date: Jan 18, 2019 12:14:50 PM

Markers for singles matches - whether in club, county or national matches - are a vital ingredient of the game and depending on the marker's competence, can make or break the players' performances.

Players need to have full confidence in the marker adjudicating their match to play at their best so it is vital that the marker comes up to scratch.

With this in mind the English Bowls Umpires Association is staging a markers' awareness course at Melton & District IBC on June 8 & 9 in an effort to educate potential markers.

The course (from 9.30am to 1.30pm) each day, is open to all indoor or outdoor club members, even if you only want to learn the ropes within your own club environment but is also the first step towards becoming a Regional Umpire of which there is a national shortage.

There is no examination at the end of the two half day sessions but there will be an attendance certificate issued and potential markers will be required to at least complete all the measuring exercises.

As well as basic measuring and using wedges to keep a bowl upright, this can range from confirming a minimum length of jack to measuring bowl to jack in the ditch and using small or large callipers.

Cost, of the course which is planned to be both informative and fun, is £10, which includes a marker's handbook and if you wish to go on to become a member of the EBUA as a marker, applicants are invited to speak to the representative after the course. It is hoped to have at least two EBUA trained markers in every club.

For further information contact Spalding-based international umpire Colin Wilson (01775 714556) with name and contact details. Stamford IBC umpire Mal Smith will also be able to provide useful advice.

STAMFORD WOMEN BEATEN IN MASONS TROPHY

Local rivals Stamford and Spalding clashed in the second round of the Senior Women's equivalent of the Men's Over 60 Double rink, with Spalding progressing by nine shots.

It was always an uphill task for Glenys Edwards' away quartet of Margaret King, Margaret Andrews and Elizabeth Wallace and they got off the a slow start against Gloria Haney, trailing 4-13 after ten ends. A three count on the 15th end gave them hope but they couldn't close the gap by the end, losing 10-19.

At Stamford skip Flick Rogers played some excellent conversion shots to help her squad of Rosemary Roberts, Janet Lonslow and Peggy Birch against the experienced Julie Hicks four but finally had to settle for a creditable draw after Hicks' rink picked up a vital three count on the penultimate end.

Spalding will play the winners of the Barwell-Carlton tie for a place in the last 16.
