'A' LATE SURGE TO BEAT SLEAFORD

With just a handful of ends to play, Stamford men's A team were in danger of conceding most of the 14 points at stake against visitors Sleaford in their Lincs League (South) encounter.

And it needed a fightback to support the runaway rinks skipped by Adam Warrington and Martyn Dolby who were having much the better of their tussles with their opponents.

From trailing by a couple of shots overall, the remaining Stamford rinks pulled their socks up and the final victory by 22 shots was a reflection of the home side's eventual overall dominance which keeps them in the hunt for honours behind Boston A and Spalding.

Next week's clash between Stamford A and Stamford B will be chiefly for bragging rights ( starting at 2.10 pm on Sunday) but will also keep the winners challenging the top sides.

Result:
Lincs Men's League (South): Stamford 89 (10 pts), Sleaford 67 (4). Stamford names only: Mal Smith, J Travis-Jenner, N Wright, A Warrington won 28-9; M Humphreys, D Miller, J Earl, M Dolby won 29-9; O Aspinall, D Bruce, C Ballard, B Warters lost 17-23; R Allam, M Ramsden, M Linnell, R Martin lost 15-26.

Footnote: Trailing by two shots with the 18th and final end to play in their national Over 50 triples, Martyn Dolby, Mick Linnell and Roger Martin scored three to beat Jeff Clipston, Cliff Watson and Ray Keating 17-16. They will play Brian Martin's trio at Spalding in the next round in January.

The Thursday Afternoon Men's domestic league is scheduled to play again from January but there is space for further teams.

Anyone wishing to enter this triples league should let League Secretary, John Holroyd know as soon as possible.

DOUBLE RINK MARCH ON

At Peterborough, the home eventually side conceded with Roger Martin's rink comfortably ahead 21-14.

LITTLE JOY FOR STAMFORD 'B'

Stamford Men's B needed three shots on the last end from the rink of Pete Linnell, Sam Downs, Ron Blake and Darren Middleton to salvage two points from their visit to Spalding. The quartet had trail 7-15 at one stage but fought back to level the scores against Martin Simpson's Spalding rink but snatched three on the last. End for a 21-18 win.

However, three other Stamford rinks were able to claim no more than 11 shots as the home side strolled to a 40-shot triumph claiming 12 of the 14 points at stake.

LINCS WIN FOR STAMFORD RINK

A 160-mile round trip for Scunthorpe bowlers proved fruitless at the weekend, when they were beaten in the preliminary round of the Lincs IBA fours by Adam Warrington's Stamford rink.

A couple of four counts from halfway in the 18-end match allowed the Stamford quartet - which included Chris Ballard, Owen Aspinall and Neil Wright - to run out 29-7 victors to earn a place in the first round to be played in January.

NORTHANTS 'B'-LITZED AT LINCOLN

Still basking in the reflection of their one shot defeat of Northants A, the county's 'B' side suffered a humbling 125-61 Derbyshire Trophy defeat by Lincolnshire on the slick Lincoln IBC carpet.

But spare a thought for Stuart and Graham Agger and Cliff Watson, who led comfortably only to concede shots in the closing ends. Gary Dickenson, Melvyn Beck and John Holroyd also came close to salvaging one of the 14 points at stake but had to given second best to John Withers rink which, from 12-16 behind, added 12 without reply in the last nine ends.
