Sad end to women's Trudy Bates campaign

The hopes of Stamford's women bowlers of adding another title to those already achieved by the men's and mixed teams in the Lincs Co-op-sponsored county leagues were dashed at Spalding today.

Needing nine points to win the Trudy Bates A League, they suffered a 20-shot defeat and picked up only three of the 16 points available.

The women led the table by four points and needed nothing less than a win to force their way into a play-off at Grantham against the winners of the B League.

But it was soon clear that Spalding were in no mood for a charitable end to Stamford's campaign.

Christine Ford's rink (with June Brennan, Jean Dupree and Shirley Suffling) won comfortably 32-11 against former Stamford player Pearl O'Brien and Denise Mackie's rink forced an extra point but elsewhere there was little joy.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs Co-op Trudy Bates A League: Spalding 102 (13pts) Stamford 82 (3). J Dye, M Broadbelt, S Moir, D Mackie drew 15-15; Moira Dolby, P Jones, S Henshaw, F Rogers lost 7-35; M Andrews, M Holden, C Warters, G Edwards lost 15-19; J Brennan, J Dupree, S Suffling, C Ford won 32-11; P Birch, A Northen, E Wallace, R March lost 13-22.

FOOTNOTE: Stamford's Over 60s men's team beat Dunholme on all rinks to capture the 18 points they needed to gain promotion back to the First Division.
