Defiant Stamford take on Spalding stars in Denny Cup

Stamford bowlers face their toughest test of the season on Saturday (10am) when the Men's "A" team face local rivals Spalding in the Denny Cup - the national inter-club championship.

Already winners over Spalding in the 5-rink Lincolnshire League, Stamford's captain Paul Bailey appreciates they are a different proposition with a condensed four-rink team of England internationals and county champions, which reached the last 16 earlier this year.

"We could have just gone for a place in the Denny Plate as first round losers and avoided Spalding but that's not in our nature at Stamford. We try to win every game and play against the best," he says defiantly.

He has had to make some enforced changes to his team following the four shot defeat of Long Sutton, bringing in Trevor Harris and 16-year-old Jon Bailey. But he believes his players are up for the challenge for the biggest match of the season so far which starts at 10am with two 4-man rinks at home and two away with the overall shots to count.

Stamford team: Home - A Romaine, W Morris, M Bailey, A Warrington; J Bailey, T Harris, J Earl, P Bailey; Away- R Allam, D Hudson, C Watson, K Rippin; S Harris, J Holroyd, P Edwards, M Dolby.

Stamford IBC's women's team just failed in their bid to knock Spalding out of the national inter-club championship at the weekend, losing 67-81 in the home and away event.

Sharon Bailey came in as a late replacement to skip one of the home rinks and with her last bowl trailed the jack for four to claim a well deserved draw for her team of Jan Want, Margaret Andrews and Shirley Suffling.

The away rink of Joyce Foster, 'Flick' Rogers, Connie Cox and Glenys Edwards also performed heoics to win 19-11. Sadly, rinks skipped by Pearl O'Brien and Chris Ford went down by 10 and 12 shots respectively.

Stamford now face Sleaford with the same team in the Yetton Plate on November 23.

Spalding also won the home Trudy Bates Women's League clash against Stamford last week by a convincing 109-65 scoreline. It did, however, include an impressive debut by Pam Barton on the only winning Stamford rink.

In the Second Division of the Lincs League, Stamford men's 'B' team made the long journey to recently relegated Skegness but returned empty-handed, victims of an 18-point defeat.

Rarely did any rink pick up the pace of the home surface and the best they could manage was an 8-shot defeat for John Geary's rink.

The Stamford rink which reached the final of the English Over 60s fours earlier this year has taken its first steps in a bid to return for a second shot at the title with a 27-17 first round success.

Mike Ramsden, Bob Warters, Peter Edwards and Martyn Dolby saw off John Maury's Boston quartet, with a competent home performance, securing victory with five shots on the 18th end.

They now face a home challenge against Stamford team-mates skipped by Derek King, whom with Richard Allam and Dave Hudson also beat Maury in the Over 50 triples 21-10.

It's been a busy time for King who succumbed 21-4 to new England international from Grantham, Matthew Orrey, in the national singles.
