Ladies Struck by Lightning

Stamford’s Senior Women’s hopes of reaching the third round of the EIBA over 60s Masons Trophy failed to materialise - beaten comprehensively by their Spalding Lightning neighbours.

Neither rink - playing one at home and one away simultaneously - could match the skill and determination of their opponents, who will meet Leicestershire club Barwell in the next round.

The Spalding club are currently in a rich vein of form and still in multiple team competitions including the Denny Cup, Egham Trophy, Top Club and Under 30 Double Rink, though their women lost by two shots to Lincoln in the Yetton Trophy.

Alex Tomlin and Jonathan West from Boston were expected to challenge for the title and looked a good bet when they led 11-9 at 14 ends but the Stamford duo hit back with eight shots in three ends and ran out 17-13 winners.

They travel to Grantham next, to face Mark Eurich and JasonLewis in the next round.

On Sunday father and son Wayne and Owen Aspinall take part in the Lincs IBA singles qualifier at Lincoln. Wayne faces the Dunholme representative while the teenager meets Jordan Philpott (Spalding).

SENIORS SETBACK

Having moved within striking distance of Lincs Over 60s League (South) leaders Lincoln A, Stamford seniors suffered a setback at Spalding, losing by just three shots and conceding 10 of the 14 points at stake.

Mick Linnell’s rink of Mike Ramsden, Steve Miner and Dennis Henshaw had given them a strong chance of snatching an overall victory with a 22-12 win but the other rinks, though rallying by the close, had fallen behind and were unable to make up their deficit.

Kevin Vinter’s four, lost an early five shot lead and Trevor Christie’s quartet conceded a vital two-count on the last end. For Roger Martin it was a game of two halves. Fourteen shots adrift of Graham Wright’s rink after eight ends, they got within five, but a four count on the 19th, ended their comeback hopes.
