Stamford bowlers have attained the rare achievement of reaching the Area final of the national fours, beating world indoor bowls quarter-finalist Mathew Orrey in the process.

Bob Warters, Malcolm Cullingworth, Tony Scarr and skip Roger Martin rarely looked in danger on their favourite Rink 5 at Stamford, running out comfortable winners 22-6, when Orrey, his father Nick, Martin Pulling and former England international Dion Auckland, from Grantham, conceded the match on the 18th end.

The Stamford quartet got off to a flying start when they took the first eight ends to build an 11-shot lead before Martin drew in for second shot when facing a six-shot count against him on the 9th.

The visitors shortened the jack length but without success and when the home four claimed a vital four when Orrey ditched the jack on the 17th end it was almost all over.

Stamford now meet the winners of the Lincoln-Horncastle tie between Dennis Skayman and Paul Bark, for a place in the inter-area final.

Former Northants federation Senior indoor singles winner Doug Want followed up his victory over Howard Shipp in the regular four-bowl version, with a narrow defeat of clubmate Alan Romaine. He led 13-9 but then conceded nine shots in four ends to trail 13-18 before hitting back with 4-2-3 to take the match 22-19. Derek King beat Roger Ward 21-9.

Romaine was also involved with Keith Rippin in the Federation pairs beating John Wiles. There were also a win for John and Moira Holroyd in the mixed pairs over Sue Moir and Richard Montgomery.
