Another top class field for Stamford Open Singles

Bowlers from as far afield as Scotland, Blackpool, Scarborough and Brighton will contest the £700 first prize when Stamford Indoor Bowls Club hosts the two-day Nigel Kettle Memorial Open Singles on September 30 and October 1.

They will also be joined by a handful of internationals including Graham Smith, Jamie Walker, Ryan Atkins and the holder Jordan Phillpott from Spalding.

Ten Stamford-based bowlers have entered the draw including Christine Ford and Shirley Suffling who are among those playing in the qualifying rounds on Saturday evening (from 6pm). The club's current county singles champion, Stephen Harris, is in action on Sunday morning.

Saturday evening matches (from 6pm): Richard Allam (Stamford) v Paul Oke (Sleaford); Bob Warters (Stamford) v Jeff Pitt (Peterborough); Andy Speechley (Stamford) v Alex Walton (St Neots); Alan Romaine (Stamford) v Rob Greenwood (Huntingdon); Michael Humphreys (Stamford) v Rod West (Boston); v Christine Ford (Stamford) v Sherod Winterton (Charnwood); Tony Barwell (Stamford) v Ron Flowers (Boston); Shirley Suffling (Stamford) v David Bristow (Sleaford).

The players will appreciate any spectator support members and friends can give the event. Bar and refreshments will be available.

Among the Sunday morning matches are Graham Smith (Spalding) v Chris Ballard (Stamford) at 8.30am and Stephen Harris (Stamford) v Wendy Brown (Scunthorpe) at 9.50.

The field includes 10 of the top 16 and 13 of the top 32 of last season's Open Singles Championship. The top 32 from last season's order of merit play off at Potters on November 24-26.

Stamford IBC members prepared to be markers during the event should contact organisers Mike Ramsden and Keith Rippin.
