Mixed team back on track with win over Scunthorpe

Post date: Oct 22, 2017 7:22:11 PM

AFTER an opening defeat at Horncastle recently, in defence of the Lincs Mixed League Division One title, Stamford quickly swept the bad memories aside with an emphatic 49-shot win at home to Scunthorpe.

They picked up 16 of the 18 points at stake and it might have been a maximum had not Scunthorpe skip Phil Boulton robbed John Little's rink of a winning position, with an accurate heavy bowl at the death.

However, Stamford captain Christine Ford was delighted with the overall 126-77 victory with some of her regulars called up for a county match. And such was the form of the substitutes that she will be reluctant to release anyone for the next match.

A new combination of Elizabeth Wallace, Moira Holroyd, Alan Barnes and Bob Warters picked up the rink honours with a 31-11 win on rink one, including a seven count on the 10th end.

There were also convincing wins for rinks skipped by Paul Bailey and Richard Montgomery with Derek King's quartet making a late surge to win 21-15.

Results (Stamford names only):

Lincs Mixed League Division One. Stamford 126 (16 pts) Scunthorpe 77 (2). The Northants A and B teams before their clash at Peterborough in the Derbyshire Trophy

WIN FOR NORTHANTS A OVER NORTHANTS B

When the dust settled after Northants Federation's first ever Derbyshire Trophy match between its A and B teams, it was James Harford's A side which won by just two shots, claiming 11 of the 14 points available.

Having met each other in the opening fixture at Peterborough, as the competition rules dictate, they now each go forward to take on North Cambs, Norfolk, Hunts and Lincs in a bid to reach the national finals in April.

And it was Harford's rink, with Stephen Harris at lead and Martyn Dolby at skip in the two-bowl triples format, that proved decisive.

They picked up six vital shots in the last three ends to secure a 32-19 win over Brian Bassam, Mick Greaves and Rod Maplethorpe and help the A team to an overall winning score of 100-98, winning two and drawing one of the four competing rinks.

Elsewhere Simon Law won 24-18 against Graham Agger and Tony Scarr's trio conceded seven shots in the last four ends to draw with Peter Brown.

Mike Ramsden stepped in for an unavailable Jon Earl and helped Mick Humphreys and John Holroyd to collect valuable points for the B team, claiming 12 shots in the last six ends.
